Feng Shui for Teachers

Feng shui can be a great force to use within the classroom if you are a teacher. Children have a great deal of energy within, which can sometimes be difficult to channel and use constructively. By using feng shui, teachers can help children properly focus their energy so that their learning experience is more productive and less frustrating. If you'd like to use feng shui in your own classroom, here are some tips that you can use to get started.

Control Classroom Clutter

Clutter is always an enemy of good feng shui, but it is also an enemy of good concentration. Many teachers decorate their classrooms with bright colors and interesting objects to make things interesting for their students. However, too much clutter can become distracting for children, making it difficult for them to focus and concentrate on the learning experience. Instead, minimize visual clutter by removing anything that seems to jump out from you when you look around the room, unless it is something you are currently using as part of your lesson plans. You can also use color to help children focus on what is most important. For example, use light or neutral colors for most of your classroom decorations and accessories, while using bright colors for displays and accessories that are focused on the current learning experience. You should also look at your classroom as though it were a river bed. If water were to flow into your classroom could it flow smoothly around the room? If there are areas where water could not flow, these are also areas that inhibit the flow of energy. If you have boxes, books or containers stacked on the floor, remove them. Organize art supplies and other equipment into containers so that energy can flow smoothly around them.

Bring Nature into the Classroom

If your classroom has windows with a pleasant view, maximize this asset. A few plants on the window sill will add to the overall natural appeal of the classroom, enhancing the positive energy within. If your classroom has windows which do not provide an appealing view, consider covering some of them with artwork or posters depicting natural subjects. You could create a "windows of the world" display by adding a poster to each window, perhaps from different countries or of different animal varieties. Posters of nature subjects are also great additions to the walls of the classroom. If your classroom doesn't have windows, make some imaginary windows of your own. Use cardboard to create one or more window frames that you can hang on the wall. Then, display nature posters inside the frames to simulate a beautiful view.

Helpful Feng Shui Touches

There are also small touches of feng shui you can add to the classroom to enhance the learning experience. Hang a small metal chime or a crystal to help stimulate the minds of the students. If possible, divide the room into separate areas designed for specific activities, such as an area for quiet study or creative art projects. Position the desks so that students can see the classroom door while seated. However, don't line the desks up directly in front of the door if possible, as this will expose them to too much direct energy. Add a couple of live plants to the classroom as a finishing touch to help breathe additional life and energy into the learning space.
